  • Oversee and vote on decisions regarding all of the responsibilities listed below

RESPONSIBILITIES OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS:

Powers are limited by state law, but commissioners may exercise broad authority in these and other areas:
  • Build and maintain roads and bridges
  • Control and care for county property
  • Appoint board of tax assessors to value all property
  • Plan and provide for parks, playgrounds, and other recreational facilities
  • Prepare, review, and decide on annual county budget
  • Promote economic and industrial development
  • Appoint and direct the county officials under their authority (which does not include other elected officials)
  • Set county taxes
  • Provide for law enforcement and correctional facilities in the county
  • Other responsibilities include maintaining water sources, sewage and storm water systems, development of building codes, planning and zoning regulations, emergency management
